Students learn that animals are predators because they have to survive and that this doesn't make them "bad".  They discuss how many of our perceptions about predators are based on myths.

In the Haunted House

Language Arts Literacy: Standard 3.2 This is a fun activity that allows the students to become fully involved while listening to a story. As the story is "acted out", the students respond to questions about characters, plot, and setting. The story is then used as a writing prompt.
       
I Remember 3 - 9 Language Arts Literacy: Standard 3.1 & 3.2  Social Studies: Standard 6.3 This mini-unit on the Holocaust provides students with the opportunity to relate to a child that experienced the horror of the Holocaust. The activities allow the students to bond with a child and understand some children's thoughts and feelings as they experienced life in a concentration camp.

 

 

 

 

Oregon Trail

Students will gather information from "Covered Wagon" by Scholastic Books. Students will find information from Internet Oregon Trail links. Students will gather supplies to take on a 4 mile trek to be carried in a replica of a Mormon handcart.

  This lesson is a great way to "hook" your students into writing a prediction about a new unit. It helps students use prior knowledge and their critical thinking skills to draw conclusions.

This lesson will encourage students to read for enjoyment. The students will compete against other teams to see how many pages they can read in 3 weeks.

 

 

  

 

  Rock Hound

Language Arts Literacy: Standard 3.2  Science: Standard 5.8  

  Students learn about Earth Science and discuss the definition of a rock, later developing the concept of how rocks form and are changed in the rock cycle. After viewing the Power Point presentation the students can log onto the Mount Rushmore web site and apply their understanding of rocks.

 

 

 

 

Using Customary Units To Measure Length 2-5 Mathematics:  STANDARD 4.1  Language Arts Literacy:  Standard 3.1: The students will read How Big is a Foot?. Then, they will have the opportunity to measure using their own form of measurement and make comparisons when they use customary units. In the next two lessons, they will use their knowledge of customary units to estimate, measure and compare their heights.

Can You Solve My Math Problems!!!! 2-6 Mathematics:  STANDARD 4.1  Language Arts Literacy: Standard 3.2 Students will create a word problem  then create a picture from KidPix and type the word problem on the page, and then print the product. Next they will create 5 word problems. Students will solve each others problems.
       

  Character Study

The students will randomly select an image of a person that will become the subject of a one paragraph character study.  The class will try to match the writing with the image.
